3rd Grade - Hundertwasser Color and Texture Study

Hundertwasser is one of my favorite lessons so far this year. During the fall I was enrolled in a visual art course for art educators. In one of the units on color theory for elementary art I came across this awesome lesson by Patty at Deep Space Sparkle. This lesson was originally created for 5th grade but my Bell 3rd graders were well up to the challenge and accomplished some very visually appealing work.

The lessons main concept was to develop the students understanding of warm and cool color palettes, patterns, lines, composition and abstract imagery. It also has strong art history component by introducing art students to Hundertwasser (1928-2000), "a visionary and responsible creator, who mobilized the power of his art in order to spread his message for a life in harmony with nature and the individual creativity. Hundertwasser was a symbolic figure for a non-conformist way of life, a forerunner of environmental protection and an ambassador for a self-determined alternative existence."

A wonderful resource for students is Harvesting Dreams: Hundertwasser Kids by Barbara Stieff and Hundertwasser (Taschen 25th Anniversary) by Harry Rand.

Visual Arts - Fall/Winter 2013

Visual Arts In Review- By Mrs. Nohelty

Throughout the course of the school year, every class from Kindergarten to Third grade meets once a week for 45 minutes in the art classroom. Bell Students will have art for approximately 12 art classes each grading period.
The program is designed to provide an enriching Fine Art experience for every student regardless of their skill-level, talent, or aptitude. All students have the opportunity to create and participate in an individualized yet cooperative artistic environment.
In the Bell Elementary art program we focus on creativity and expression of individual artistic accomplishment. The students, regardless of age, are encouraged to engage in the visual arts while working within the structure and expectations of the Marblehead Public School Fine Arts Curriculum, and the Massachusetts State Visual Arts Educational Frameworks. Art lessons within the Bell School program are developed with a strong emphasis age appropriate artistic skills while integrating the theories of Elements and Principals around Art and Design.  Students are graded according to their willingness to participate, age appropriate visual art skill sets and classroom behavior.

Second Grade Music, Fall 2013

Second Grade Music:

This fall, the second grade has continued to explore and stretch their vocal range through various warm-ups and songs.  Students are becoming more comfortable with their singing voice and are beginning to match pitch consistently.  Students have continued to work on independently maintaining a steady beat through songs and movement.  Second grade has been exposed to basic notation, to include both the family of “notes” and “rests.”  Students have started to recognize standard notation in sheet music that has been part of the Winter Musical learning process.  Although they have learned the note or rest values of notation, this is something that will be further developed next year in preparation for recorder in third grade.  Second grade has been challenged with preparing for their first musical at the Bell School.  They have been learning to read through short vocal scores, identify repeat signs and follow a song from verse to verse.  All of the classes have grown tremendously and are for the most part independent in following a simple vocal score.  In December, the students will look forward to working on the risers, learning appropriate performance etiquette and piecing the show together for our dress rehearsal and performance.

Third Grade Music, Fall 2013

Third Grade Music

This fall, the third grade has continued to explore and stretch their vocal range through various warm-ups and songs.  Students are comfortable with their singing voice and are matching pitch consistently.  Third grade has been exposed to basic notation, to include both the family of “notes” and “rests.”  They have been working on note and rest values and how the family tree of each is related.  Students were able to apply previously learned math skills, specifically fractions when dealing with “value” or “beats of sound or silence” and addition and subtraction when dealing with “musical math.” Students have started to recognize standard notation in sheet music that has been part of the Winter Musical learning process and are able to name and identify their value.  All of this is necessary to make sure they have the appropriate tools for recorder, which will start right after our Winter Musical performance in January.  In addition to standard notation, third graders are now independently reading and singing through simple scores, after a short review of repeat signs.  In the next month, students will review how to get on and off the risers, performance etiquette and will work on memorization of speaking parts (for those who wanted speaking roles).

First Grade Music, Fall 2013

First Grade Music

This fall, the first graders have completed a review of the four voices used in the music classroom by identifying and demonstrating all voices.  They have also continued to sing through various vocal exploration exercises as they develop and stretch the range of their singing voices and further their recognition and ability to accurately match pitch.  First graders are working on new and more challenging movement songs, which promote their coordination and foster their creativity.  Many of these songs require the children to introduce the class to a new movement that they have thought up or created.  In December, the first grade students have begun to explore new circle songs that are more complex than those learned in kindergarten.  Students have been introduced to the more strict form of duple meter and the more flowing and swaying triple meter.  Students will demonstrate and identify these meters, as well as maintaining a steady beat on the barred instruments as well as using unpitched percussion.

Kindergarten Music, Fall 2013

Kindergarten Music

This Fall, the kindergarteners have been learning about the four voices used in the music classroom.  Students are able to name and demonstrate each of the four voices (singing, speaking, whispering, and loud).  It is important for these young singers to start to “find” and identify their singing voice and how it differs from the other voices that they have been using during early childhood development.  Students have been learning vocal exploration warm-ups and songs to aid in finding that singing voice and to also work on their ability to match limited pitch ranges of children in this age bracket.  Students have been working on movement songs which encourage the children to be able to sing and move at the same time.  In addition, it works fine motor skills and coordination.   In the December and January, students will be learning the basics for playing the soprano xylophone and glockenspiel.  They will use this instrument for creative purposes and to start a focus on maintaining a steady beat.
